WhatsApp finally launched the much awaited video calling feature, however in no time it grabbed the attention of spammers, who started to target the users landing them to a fake website.
Soon after the new feature being launched, users of WhatsApp started receiving spam messages, which read “You’re invited to try WhatsApp Video Calling feature. Only people with the invitation can enable this feature”. This is an invitation link sent to users by spammers. Read more here.
Clicking on the link, users land to a spam website which appears to be extremely real as it contains screenshots very similar to the actual app. After the users land on the site, they are asked to tap on the ‘Enable Video Calling’ button. Next a series of messages pop up such as ‘video calls activating service’, ‘receiving answer’ and ‘receiving verification link’.
The next part is the ‘User Verification’ where the users should prove that they are active users of WhatsApp by inviting four friends and sharing the link in 4 active groups to activate video call in WhatsApp.
This occurs as a chain of spam messages being circulated among WhatsApp users. Clicking on this link, the user unknowingly exposes his or her phone to the spammer who can access the data stored in the device.
Users who want to activate video calling feature need to just update the WhatsApp app by vising the Play Store (Android users) & App Store (iOS users). Once, the app is updated, users can easily make video call without any further configuration.
Spammers often target users of popular apps by circulating spams whenever any new feature is being launched. Hence, one should be careful enough not to get deceived by these widely circulated messages. Updating an app must be done only by visiting the Play Store.
